How to Find Cheap Flights

The habits that actually lower airfare: flexible dates, smarter comparison, and knowing when a low fare is worth booking.

Airfare moves constantly. The same seat can cost very different amounts depending on the day you search, the day you fly, and where you look. You cannot control airline pricing, but you can control how you shop for it.

Be flexible with your dates first

Dates matter more than any other single factor. Midweek departures are often cheaper than Friday and Sunday, and shifting a trip by one or two days can change the total noticeably.

  • Compare a few departure and return dates instead of one fixed pair
  • Check the day before and after your ideal dates
  • Avoid holiday weekends and school-break peaks when you can

Compare in one place instead of many tabs

Checking airline sites one at a time is slow and easy to get wrong. A comparison search shows many airlines and travel sites together so you can see the real range of prices for your route.

Consider nearby airports

Large cities often have more than one airport, and secondary airports can be cheaper. Add the cost and time of ground transport before deciding.

Watch out for what is not included

A low headline fare is not always the cheapest trip. Before you book, check:

  • Carry-on and checked bag allowances and fees
  • Seat selection costs
  • Change and cancellation rules
  • Long layovers or overnight connections

Our guide to basic economy versus standard economy covers the fare rules most travelers get caught by.

Book when the price is reasonable, not perfect

Waiting for an all-time low usually costs more than it saves. If a fare looks fair for your route and season, and the rules work for your plans, it is usually a good time to book.
