What to Check Before Booking a Rental Car
Published September 16, 2026 · 1 min read

A short pre-booking checklist that prevents most rental car surprises.
Most rental problems are avoidable. Run through this list before you confirm a booking.
Driver requirements
- Minimum age for the car class, and any young-driver fee
- Whether your licence is accepted, and if an international permit is needed
- Whether the card at the counter must be in the main driver''s name
The booking details
- Pick-up and drop-off locations, including the exact terminal or branch
- Opening hours — after-hours pick-up sometimes costs extra
- Fuel policy and expected fuel level at return
- Mileage allowance
- Cross-border or off-highway restrictions
Deposit and payment
Expect a security hold on your card. Confirm the amount and whether a debit card is accepted, since many locations require a credit card.
At the counter and at the car
Photograph existing damage, confirm the fuel level matches the paperwork, and keep your rental agreement until the final charge appears on your statement.
